He received several blows to the head during a match against Djurgården.
Now Fredrik Styrman, 31, is forced to end his career.
– I will miss hockey, he tells NSD.
It was at the end of the first period during a match between Djurgården and Luleå, last fall, that the unfortunate situation came to light. Fredrik Styrman, profile in Luleå, got into a fight with Peter Holland, who brought his opponent down on the ice.
Ending career
Holland got Styrman’s helmet off, and after that he delivered a series of blows to Styrman’s head. Holland was fined SEK 40,000 for the move, and he also missed four games due to suspension. But for Styrman the consequences were even worse.
There were no more games that season, and the concussion now turns out to be so serious that he chooses to end his career.
– I still get concussion symptoms when I exert myself and the doctors have advised me not to continue playing, says Styrman to Norrländska Socialdemokraten.
“It feels awful”
However, Styrman believes that he, fortunately enough, is doing well in everyday life.
– I understood that the career would end at some point. It does that for everyone. But I hoped to play for many more years, and it feels too damn good that it ended the way it did. At the same time, hockey is not everything, he says.
During the months where he tried to get back to ice hockey, Fredrik Styrman has at the same time started studying economics. He has also become a father.
– Of course I will miss hockey. But few are blessed to work with their hobby as long as I did, and I’m only looking forward now, says Styrman. In total, there were 260 games in the SHL for the defender, who then accounted for 22 points.
