The SHL profile leaves Sweden and moves to Russia – another Swede makes the controversial move: “We hope”

In recent months, several players have left Swedish hockey for the Russian KHL.
Now another SHL profile has made the decision to move to Russia.
Former Brynäs player and junior national team member Dmytro Timashov has signed for HC Sochi.

It was after Brynäs left the SHL in 2023 that Dmytro Timashov left Swedish hockey for Swiss Ajoie. After one season in the alpine country, it is now clear that the 27-year-old is moving on in his career.

Timashov moves

Timashov makes the controversial move to Russia and has signed for a KHL team. On Instagram, HC Sochi announces that they agree with the Swedish forward.
“He will be the fourth foreign player in the team. Welcome to Sochi, Dmytro! We hope for success!”, writes the club on social media.

Dmytro Timashov has previously played in both the NHL and AHL as well as the Swedish junior national team during his career. Now he agrees on a contract valid until 2025 in the KHL.

Great criticism

Last season, four Swedes played in the Russian hockey league, that was Frederick Claesson, Robin Press, Pontus Åberg and Johan Mattsson. Recently Åberg Barys left Astana, but during the spring several SHL players have made the decision to move to Russia and the KHL.

Such a move is controversial because for over two years Russia has attacked Ukraine in war. Swedish players who have remained in the KHL or moved there have received great criticism.
