The SHL icon is now a big success in a completely different sport – reveals why he left hockey: “Easier than you think”

Peter Nordström played over 500 games for Färjestad in the SHL.
Now he is successful as a coach in a completely different sport.
– That’s the way it happened, says Nordström to Radiosporten.

Former hockey player Peter Nordstrom has a well-deserved hockey career behind him. The left forward made 113 senior international matches and played for IFK Munkfors, Leksands IF, Boston Bruins, and is an icon in Färjestads BK. The merit list includes, among other things, five SC golds, a WC gold and a WC silver.

Nordström in AIK

Nordström put the skates on the shelf in 2011 after prolonged injury problems, and began his stay as a hockey coach shortly after. He coached clubs such as Forshaga IF in division 1, Filipstads IF in division 2, and spent a few months as head coach in AIK in the hockey allsvenskan.

After just over eight years in the industry, he resigned in 2019, and resigned as coach for Vimmerby in division 1. Two years later, Peter was back as coach. But this time in a completely different sport.

Peter’s turn

In 2021, the former hockey player was presented as coach for the floorball team (!) Karlstads IBF.
– In Vimmerby it didn’t work on the side of the ice for me, and I want to work my way with a staff and so on. Indoor bandy came quite suddenly, my closest friends are also hockey coaches, and we sat and talked about a few different things. Then we said that maybe we should try to do something for Karlstad Innebandy, “we’ll take them to SSL”. Then we contacted Karlstad and that’s the way it went, says Nordström to Radiosporten.

The experience Peter has of floorball is that he has previously played and followed the sport. But after one season at the club, he managed to lead the team to promotion to SSL, and Karlstad now plays in the Swedish top flight.
– What you don’t think about is that an NHL rink is only six meters wider than a floorball court. I think people who have talked to me about floorball make it too advanced. It’s actually only one pass and you have a scoring chance in floorball, why should you keep hitting seven or ten passes then. Sometimes it’s actually easier than you think.
