The ship Marco Polo is evacuated – risk of collision

The ship Marco Polo must be evacuated, as there is a risk that the ship will capsize and lay on its side in the water. The ship has slipped off the ground, where it has been since the grounding a week ago.
39 people are on board.

– We are preparing to evacuate the ship because it has moved 100 meters out into deeper water, says Sara Jönsson, assistant sea rescue leader JRCC.

According to information to TV4 Nyheterna, it is Marco Polo’s commander who wants to evacuate the crew as the situation worsens.

Two groundings

The ship ran aground in Hanö Bay last Sunday in two groundings. These led to a large oil spill, and extensive clean-up work has been ongoing ever since.

During Saturday, they started pumping up the oil that remains in the tank that was damaged in the grounding. The plan was also to pump the remaining 300,000 liters of oil into the undamaged tanks during the week.

So far, over 25,000 liters of oil have been taken up by the Coast Guard in collaboration with the municipality and county administration and with the support of the Home Guard.
