Netflix wanted to broadcast a major sporting event, but millions of users were unable to use the streaming service. Netflix has wanted to get into the sports sector for a long time.
Why is Netflix suddenly doing sports? Netflix wants to make money and wants to grow. With the pure subscription numbers and increasing fees, at some point you will have reached an end.
That’s why the group also wants to enter other areas. There is still a lot of potential and, above all, financial opportunities, especially when it comes to live sports reporting:
With the big boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, the streaming service wanted to show that it can do more than that: broadcast major sporting events. After all, it’s not about little money here either: According to digital television, Tyson is said to have received between 50 and 100 million euros as a fee. But Netflix has now failed to stream the event.
The viewers who want to stream the event via Netflix see nothing
What went wrong? The boxing match took place on the night of November 15th to 16th, 2024. For us Germans, the event started at 3 a.m., the main fight started at 5:30 a.m.
But many users complained about problems with the technology during the preliminary battles. Using the hashtag #netflixcrash, thousands of users reported on Netflix’s X page that the servers were no longer accessible.
By the time the main battle was over, it was completely over for many users. It is not known how many users were actually affected. Even Jake Paul, one of the two boxers, joked: “More than 120 million people on Netflix, we took the site down.”
More Netflix and sports: So far, Netflix has mainly shown documentaries in the sports sector. And wrestling is one of the biggest entertainment shows in the world, and wrestlers are famous celebrities who also appear in films. Vince McMahon is behind the whole business and Netflix is dedicating a documentary to the man. MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes was more captivated by the documentary series than with many films: New series on Netflix shows the man who made wrestlers like The Rock famous – It’s as exciting as a good thriller
