Screenwriter Daisy Coulam revealed during a question-and-answer session that although she was not inspired by a specific criminal case, she nevertheless remained inspired by “true crime” documentaries, in particular “The Staircase”. The writer Michael Peterson, convicted of the murder of his wife in 2003, notably inspired the ambiguity of the protagonist played by David Tennant. The investigation which led to the imprisonment of Michael Peterson also inspired the series broadcast on TF1. After spending several years in prison and following investigations and trials, he was released on February 24, 2017.
