Apple TV+ has established itself as the new savior in the science fiction sector. After the sci-fi hits For All Mankind, Foundation, Silo and Severance, Apple is finally turning the neglected fantasy genre into a critically acclaimed hit.
The Changeling is the name of the horror adventure all fantasy fans must have on their screens.
The most intense fantasy fairy tale of the year starts today – and there are two things you need to be clear about before watching
The fantasy series The Changeling is a film adaptation of the acclaimed novel of the same name * by Victor LaValle. The story begins with lovers Apollo (Lakeith Stanfield) and Emmy (Clark Backo). But her young family happiness seems to be cursed and after a terrible event, Apollo is drawn into a horror fairy tale world. We don’t want to reveal any more about the plot.
The first warning goes to pregnant women and parents of small children: You should definitely find out about the beginning of the story in advance. I’ll put it this way: If M. Night Shyamalan’s horror series Servant, also on Apple TV+, was too intense for you, you should stay away from The Changeling.

The second warning: The Changeling season 1 ends in the middle of the story. Only the first half of the novel is shown in season 1 of the fantasy film adaptation. The end is therefore open and the second season has not yet been officially ordered. Should we sit with our questions, we can at least take comfort in the underlying book that will answer them.
The reviews speak for themselves: The Changeling is a must-read for fantasy fans who can endure horror
If you believe the reviews, the first season of The Changeling is still worth it. The fantasy adventure scored 71 out of 100 on Metacritic. For comparison: The currently extremely popular fantasy adventure One Piece is at 67 on the criticism platforms. Of course, tastes are always subjective, so we also have a few meaningful insights from the critics: inside.
Collider calls The Changeling one “Captivating and nerve-wracking adaptation” and a “welcome addition” of the fantasy genre. For Ready Steady Cut and many others, LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out) is the main argument for the series:
LaKeith Stanfield is phenomenal in the lead role and the horror elements captivate you.
Allison Picurro warns at TV Line about the open ending and that the series isn’t exactly gentle with viewers:
Many people will be bothered by the finale, which doesn’t answer all the questions […], but it didn’t bother me that the series doesn’t want to hold hands with the audience. Everyone who embarks on this journey gets a beguiling picture book in series form.
The Changeling starts on Apple TV+ on September 8, 2023 with the first three of eight episodes. A new episode will be released every week until October 13th. In total, you will be presented with 400 minutes of the horror fairy tale in season 1, as each episode is almost 50 minutes long on average.
