The security measures for the football European Championship in Germany did not work at all on Saturday, when Portugal played in the middle match of the day against Turkey.

Portugal easily won the match with 3–0 goals, but as the match progressed, the fans who repeatedly rushed onto the field became a more significant phenomenon. The crowd reached the grass at least four times during the match, and every one of Portugal’s star strikers tried Cristiano Ronaldo round.

The first supporter was the youngest of all, as the little boy ran into the center circle straight to Ronaldo. He tried to take a group photo with his phone while the orderlies ran after him. The visit to Ronaldo was short before the escape journey continued.

– Disrespectful behavior, no matter how sympathetic the little boy’s running is. It encourages this, Urheulu’s expert Antti Pohja remarked while recounting the events after the match.

However, this was only the beginning.

As the match progressed, people ran up to Ronaldo from the stands three more times. The next man who ran onto the field was already older and literally clung to Ronaldo. The third and fourth were also adult men. Everyone had a phone in their hand. After the first incident, Ronaldo himself started shouting fans away from him, clearly frustrated. He also shook his head and looked around in amazement at the poor security.

– You have to remember that now we’re really just trying to take a picture. So what if there is something else involved? That’s the possibility we’re talking about. This is pointless, but there is always the element that what if the knife comes out, asked Urheilu’s expert Markus Halsti.

Immediately after the final whistle, the same thing happened again. The TV camera that followed Ronaldo throughout the match showed how a group of orderlies positioned themselves specifically around Ronaldo to protect him from further disturbances.

Urheilu’s reporter who was on the spot Jussi Vainikka and expert Paulus Arajuuri said that after the match, there were at least two other fans running up to Ronaldo. One of them was grabbed so hard that he limped on his leg when he was escorted off the field. So the total number of fans who made it to the field was at least seven.

Chasing one fan also led to another unpleasant situation, when the security guard who was running after the supporter on the field was hit by the Portuguese striker at high speed to Goncalo Ramoswho limped off the field after being hit in the knee area.

The F group match was played at Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion. Four group stage matches and two playoff matches, including one in the semi-finals, will be played on the same stage.

With their win, Portugal rose to six points and secured their place in the next round. Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes and assisted one of the goals.
