The Security Council calls for an end to arms deliveries

He further warned that sanctions could be imposed against the gangs that are rampant, but also against those who violate human rights on the spot.

The Security Council has called on the international community to stop supplying arms as violence has escalated in recent months on the island. A strong warning.

While renewing the mandate of the UN political mission in Haiti, the Binuh, for one year, a broad discussion took place between the members of the Council to reflect on how to help Port-au-Prince to stem the rise in violence . The latest clashes which have claimed 89 lives in one week have highlighted the extreme need to act. China would even have wanted an arms embargo to be declared outright. A position surprisingly going in the direction of the Haitian government, while Beijing does not carry Haiti in its heart since the country recognized the sovereignty of Taiwan… and nine months ago, had tried to limit the mandate of Binuh. This was not totally rejected by the Council, but not voted on this time.

China had also proposed that an international police force be sent there – but this proposal was not accepted either. On the other hand, the Council has provided that individual sanctions can be taken within three months against gang leaders. And asked the UN Secretariat to submit a report by October 15 to study with the countries of the region ways to strengthen security in Haiti.
