On July 9, 1956 in Concord, California, Tom Hanks was born to a hospital worker mother and a cook father who divorced when he was only 5 years old. In 1965, he and his four siblings arrived in Oakland where he enrolled at Skyline High School. As an option, he will take drama lessons there. He then acted in several plays which earned him an acting prize from his school in 1974. Encouraged by his teacher to pursue this hobby, he took acting classes after high school and quickly abandoned his studies to go on stage. .
