This is how you get hacked on Facebook – the simple mistake many make

News24 has previously reported on the simple mistake that can get you as a Facebook user hacked.

It’s about accidentally clicking on links sent to you by a friend whose account has been hacked. For example, it could be an invitation to see a funny picture via a link that actually leads to a fake login page. If you log in, the hacker gets direct access to your Facebook account.

But there are other tricks that Facebook hackers use to access both your login credentials and money.

Måns Jonassoninternet expert at the Internet Foundation, shares some common ways criminals use hacked accounts to trick you into opening your wallet.

“Your hacked Facebook friend may also start sending you messages that they need money, they may be ‘stuck in Berlin’ and need a penny to get home, or have an offer where you can buy Bitcoin or something else for huge favorable price”, writes Måns Jonasson in an email to Nyheter24 and adds:

“The end goal is always money, but even if they don’t manage to blow you money, your hacked account can still be valuable, to blow your friends.”

The hackers can also trick you into downloading programs specifically designed to get hold of your login credentials.

“There are also malicious programs that you can be tricked into installing, for example via pirated software, which lie and “listen” on your computer and can intercept login information that way,” explains Måns Jonasson.

How to keep your Facebook account safe

In addition to watching out for links in Messenger—even when they’re from someone you know—there are two important things you should do to keep your Facebook account safe.

“The first thing to do is to activate two-factor authentication. Then it is no longer enough to just use your email address and your password to log in. It makes it more complicated to log in, but also much more difficult to hack your account,” writes Måns Jonasson to Nyheter24 and adds:

“You must also make sure that you do not have the same password on Facebook as you have on other websites”.
