KooKoo was one of the strong candidates for the playoffs at the beginning of the season. Kouvola had already gotten used to “players” four springs before. That’s why the ranking is disappointing.
Kouvola KooKoo’s season in the Ice Hockey League ended this time with the regular season. 12th place was by no means satisfactory.
Head coach at the start of the season Olli Salo said the team is aiming for a top six finish at the end of the season. It was the other way around.
Sports director Jarno Kultanen has already managed to sum up the reasons for the season’s disappointment.
– Our season was really restless. There were a lot of illnesses and injuries and we never got to such a steady performance that it would have started to give us points in the series, Kultanen says.
KooKoo was a promising upper middle caste team ahead of the season. It had received reinforcements for attack and defense.
– On paper, it was the best team I’ve ever assembled. The attack was top-notch and the goalkeepers were the same for the third year, but it’s pointless, Kultanen reflects.
In front of the new
KooKoo’s next season’s team is already building at a good pace. The frame is assembled, but there is still a lot to do.
– Many contracts ended now. The training will be completely new. This is also an opportunity for us to renew the team, says Kultanen.
A new team is already being built throughout the season. When the teams end their season one by one in the spring, the news about player transfers starts to accelerate.
– I hope that the team would already be in such a shape by Midsummer that July could be free. But it has never happened yet, Kultanen laughs.
