The Season 18 finale shakes the show to its core

Warning, here are spoilers for the end of Season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy: In Germany Grey’s Anatomy is still in the middle of season 18, in the USA the popular hospital series has now ended with a dramatic double episode. A 19th season has already been ordered, but the current season finale, which is also the 400th episode of the series shows that the hospital hit is now truly on its way to completion.

What happens in the Grey’s Anatomy season 18 finale?

At the start of season 18, Grey’s Anatomy turned the series inside out and abolished Corona. The end of the current season brings that entire hospital on the brink of collapse. At the action level, this is reflected in the scarcity of blood reserves, which means that not all patients can be saved. But the real dramatic cuts are in the workforce. Because in the end, nothing is the same for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and her colleagues and that half the staff leaves.

The best way to break down the Grey’s Anatomy events from the season 18 finale is to look at the people involved, with the dramatic turns first:

  • Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman (Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver) are at the end of the 18th season on the run: After Owen’s illegal euthanasia in the middle of the season, another soldier wants to use these “services” for his wife. After a refusal, he reports Owen’s previous act to Bailey. She says she needs to report him to the police, but gives him a head start to run.
  • Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber (Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr.) are Season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy unemployed. In the chaos of lost staff and a lack of blood supplies, the rescue of the training program for young residents fails. The future of Levi (Jake Borelli) and Co. is now uncertain. After this loss, junior trainer Richard no longer has a job, and Bailey, overwhelmed, quits her job to protect her own health.
  • Meredith Grey has to stay for now, having already had one foot out the door. Grey’s Anatomy’s main character actually wanted to leave Seattle after the training program was saved. After her patient dies in an unauthorized, risky procedure, she is the only one left to somehow pick up the broken pieces of the hospital. She finds herself unintentionally in the executive chair again and sends her new love Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) away.
  • Great feelings: Grey’s Anatomy looks back a lot in the 400th episode

As usual for anniversary episodes, Grey’s Anatomy also brings a lot of nostalgia in the finale. Meredith’s mother, Ellis Gray (Kate Burton), resurfaces to ghostly criticize her daughter. Countless flashbacks show the beginnings of the first season (including Derek, Izzie, George and Co.). Because the season isn’t just supposed to end on a purely somber note, and there’s also a few happy ending bright spots:

  • Maggie Pierce and Winston Ndugu (Kelly McCreary and Anthony Hill) face their first crisis when Maggie wonders how well she really knows her husband after their quick marriage. But in the end they can hold on to their love.
  • Jo Wilson and Link (Camilla Luddington and Chris Carmack) reconnect with their deep friendship after Jo’s breakup, which had been shattered by sex together and Jo’s discovered feelings for her best friend.
  • Amelia Shepherd and Kai Bartley (Caterina Scorsone and ER Fightmaster) Unwilling to accept their differences (with children and family) as insurmountable, they get back together.
  • Catherine Fox‘ (Debbie Allen) Cancer can be curbed again for the time being with successful chemotherapy. She travels with Richard.
  • Jackson Avery and April Kepner (Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew) return to the chaos of Gray Sloan Hospital for a guest appearance and even give us a secret update on their relationship: they got back together in Boston (see video).
  • Grey’s Anatomy and the End: The series is very personal and meta right now

Most interesting, however, is how Grey’s Anatomy is currently positioning itself towards its own end: Because the tangible series finale, which according to a pact should coincide with Ellen Pompeo’s exit, has long since arrived at the level of action. It remains to be seen whether the ratings will be too good and Grey’s Anatomys will continue without Ellem Pompeo. Yet Meredith farewell looks close enough to touch.

Grey’s Anatomy: Season 18 ending teases Meredith’s departure

This was first revealed in episode 16 of season 18, where Meredith explained that she don’t pressure them to stay to let want – which can be transferred to Ellen Pompeo in no uncertain terms: Just because the hospital (the series) has helped her to enormous success does not mean that the doctor (the actress) is obliged to spend her life there.

Meredith agreed in the second half of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 to stay at least long enough to save the training program. The failure of this project complicates the whole thing, but still only seems like that Postponing the inevitable to be. Or as the show puts it in Meredith’s traditional voiceover: “The end of an era is easier said than done.”
