Madeleine McCann disappeared during a family holiday at a tourist resort in the Algarve. Her siblings – two-year-old twins – slept in the same room as her while the parents left the apartment for dinner.
Later that evening it was discovered that a window was open in the apartment and that Madeleine was gone.
She still has not been found, despite extensive search efforts and great attention from media worldwide.
After the disappearance, the McCann family stayed in Portugal for several months in the hope of being able to fly home with Madeleine. However, they had to return without her in the autumn of the same year.
