On social networks, parents do not hesitate to share their model of education. Between the most modern and the greenest, some mothers define themselves as “scrunchy moms”. A kind of mixture of the two worlds. We explain to you.
You may be a “scrunchy mom” without even knowing it. This concept found a particular echo on social networks. This new term combines two modes of education, between modernity and ecology. The “scrunchy moms” are the result of the fusion between the “silky moms”, mothers using the advantages of the modern world such as disposable diapers, drugs or even technology, and the “crunchy moms”, these mothers preferring a more holistic, relying on essential oils and more ecological alternatives such as wooden toys rather than plastic or homemade meals and breastfeeding rather than prepared meals and powdered milk. The “scrunchy moms” navigate between these two worlds by fighting against the stereotypes and judgments linked to the two types of parental education from which they come. The “crunchy moms” are, for example, often accused of being anti-vaccine while the “silky moms” are considered pro-vaccine.
On TikTok, this trend of “scrunchy moms” has grown and already has more than 10.2 million views with the hashtag #scrunchymoms. Behind this trend, which has gone viral on the Chinese social network, and is entirely used by women, mothers describe their daily lives with humor and sincerity, trying to favor more eco-responsible behaviors, while allowing themselves the use of modern conveniences in health, technology and sometimes even succumbing to the ease of “fast food”.
It’s all about balance, according to these moms. Many of them describe this “fashion” as a necessary step in their evolution as a parent, to offer the best to their children. Others underline the difficulty of moving completely to a 100% eco-responsible education, highlighting either its expensive cost or its sometimes less practical side.
On Instagram, influencer Hilary Rose Bodiford reacted to this trend: It’s called balance. Have you heard of “crunchy” or “silky” moms, well I’m right in the middle as a proud “scrunchy” mom who will pay $20 for a vegan leather bib, but I absolutely don’t use either washable diapers. We love beautiful wooden toys, but we will also buy some fun plastic light-up toys for sure. And if we like to use mainly glass bottles, it is necessary for us to also have plastic ones for travel or on the go”.
