Dune: Prophecy revolves around the sci-fi machinations of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood

When Dune says “prequel,” the emphasis is on the “prequel,” because the series is set in the science fiction world created by Frank Herbert 10,000 years before Paul Atreides and Chani. At this time, the conspiratorial sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit begins manipulating the bloodlines of the great noble houses in order to produce the superbeing Kwisatz Haderach in the distant future.

The focus is on the two of them Harkonnen sisters Vilya and Tula, played by Emily Watson (Chernobyl) and Olivia Williams (The Crown). But Mark Strong, Vikings star Travis Fimmel, Indian superstar Tabu and many others are also on board the Dune series.

Despite the big leap from the past, we don’t have to do without familiar elements from the Dune movies: even the gigantic ones Sandworms and members of well-known noble houses can already be seen at the time of Dune: Prophecy.

Why has the Dune series taken so long to arrive?

Implementing the novel The Throne of the Desert Planet by Frank Herbert’s son Brian Herbert proved to be bumpy affair with a lot of sand in the gears. After several personnel changes behind the scenes and some realignments, the sci-fi experienced Alison Schapker (Fringe, Altered Carbon) is currently responsible for the format as showrunner.

The filming of Dune: Prophecy took place in Budapest with a mostly British cast, so at least there were no further delays due to the Hollywood strike in 2023. Six episodes were filmed.
