In 1982, Disney released a fascinating sci-fi adventure: Tron. The film, equipped with groundbreaking effects, took you into the world of a computer and continued in 2010 with the visually stunning Tron Legacy. Since then, however, the series has been idle. Part 3 failed several times.

Originally, Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski wanted to make another sequel. 2015 the project put on hold by Disney. Since then, there have been various attempts at resuscitation, including Garth Davis (known for Lion and Mary Magdalene) being involved in a Tron 3 pitch. It is only now that the matter becomes concrete again.

The sci-fi epic continues after 13 years: Tron 3 comes with Marvel star Jared Leto

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, there is finally good news about the third Tron movie in development, titled Tron: Ares. It stars Jared Leto, who recently made his debut as Morbius in Sony’s Marvel Universe delivered. He has been associated with Tron for several years.

Tron: Ares is directed by Joachim Rønning, who is already under the Disney umbrella several big blockbusters implemented. He directed Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) with his directing partner Espen Sandberg before going on to single-handedly direct Maleficent 2: The Dark Knights (2019).

Most recently, Rønning has wrapped up work on the Gertrude Ederle biopic Young Woman and the Sea, starring Daisy Ridley, which is set to premiere on Disney+ later this year. Ronning enjoys the trust of the studio. In the course of Tron: Ares he films a screenplay by the relatively unknown Jesse Wigutow.

Sci-Fi Return: When will Tron 3 hit theaters?

An official theatrical release for Tron 3 is still undetermined. It is also unknown what the plot is about. The choice of a new lead actor suggests that this isn’t a direct sequel to Tron Legacy. However, we are not dealing with a complete reboot of the series.
