With The Three-Body Problem, Game of Thrones showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff have been doing this so far this year most elaborate science fiction project from Netflix. This adapts the popular sci-fi novel The Three Suns, the start of the Trisolaris trilogy by the Chinese author Cixin Liu, in 8 episodes.
The Netflix series is not the only film adaptation of the material this year. China launched its own adaptation, Three Body, back in January. While Netflix’s The Three-Body Problem doesn’t have a launch date yet, you can already stream the Chinese series competition – and it’s completely free.
The sci-fi series Three-Body is the best preparation for the Netflix event
Of course, to prepare yourself for the biggest sci-fi event of the year on Netflix, you can read the novel – or you can watch the Chinese film adaptation. This adapts the entire plot of the novel extremely precisely in 30 episodes. The Netflix adaptation with its 8 episodes will probably not be able to cope with that.
But what is Three-Body about anyway? The plot is extremely complex, cerebral and fascinating at the same time. It all starts in 2007 with a series of deaths. All over the world, scientists commit suicide for no apparent reason. Nano-scientist Wang Miao and policeman Si Qiang investigate related strange incidents, which eventually lead them to stumble upon a mysterious VR game.
How all this is related to the experiences of the astrophysicist Ye Wenjie years earlier at the time of the Cultural Revolution and the unsolvable three-body problem of an extraterrestrial civilization is only revealed bit by bit.

Unfortunately, the Chinese version can no budget of a Netflix blockbuster production show. In return, she captures the charm of the original excellently with her smoldering and sometimes exhausting narrative style, which is sometimes reminiscent of the Netflix series Dark and 1899.
