The flood disaster that hit Spain on Tuesday has killed 150 people.
Satellite images show how the city of Valencia was filled with huge masses of water.
– My wife and I do not want to stay. It’s already a nightmare, says Antonio Molina to TV4 Nyheterna.
The floods are the deadliest in over 50 years in Spain. In and outside the city of Valencia alone, 150 people have died and the search for the missing continues. Authorities warn that the death toll will rise.
– You can’t stand it, in the end you lose everything… Sorry, you feel completely powerless, says a crying Antonio Molina resident in Godelleta to TV4 Nyheterna.
Can’t get help
Thousands are now seeking shelter in temporary accommodation and the painstaking work of clearing streets, homes and businesses has begun – with 75,000 people still without power.
The streets have started to be cleared but critics and people who live in southern Valencia tell TV4 Nyheterna that it has taken far too long for the authorities to get in and help people.
– Many say that they don’t get enough help, but now at least emergency help is coming to this area in southern Valencia, says TV4 Nyhetern’s foreign reporter Jona Källgren.
“Take several years”
A thick mud covers the whole city. With the help of satellite images, it is possible to see how quickly the river bed in Valencia was filled with huge masses of water. Many roads and the rail network connecting the city to the rest of Spain remain closed.
– It is very difficult to understand how to clear this area where there are hundreds of cars stacked on top of each other. This clearing work will take months and the reconstruction will certainly take several years, says Jona Källgren.
