the Sangomar deposit turns out to be richer than expected

Good news for Senegal. Oil production from the Sangomar field exceeds expectations. It should be around 15 to 16 million barrels for its first six months of operation. The Sangomar field, 100 kilometers from Dakar, operated by the Australian Woodside, is therefore starting on very good foundations.

Four million barrels more than expected. For a deposit that has just started, “ this is very encouraging », explains Charles Thiemele, director Africa of the oil and gas trading company BGN. “ Historically, in the African basins, a lot of caution has always been exercised to ensure that everything goes well, but today, the latest production, whether in Senegal on Sangomar, in Ivory Coast on Baleine, we realize that the objectives have all been achieved, even exceeded. This is very good news. This attests to a technology which has now proven itself and operators who are fully up to the challenge », underlines Charles Thiemele.

The long-term production objective is 100,000 barrels per day, double today’s figure, an interesting windfall for the country which is participating, for the moment, at 18% in the project. In terms of revenue, next year, this could represent more than half a billion dollars for the state coffers, with the added bonus of Senegalese oil on the local market thanks to the Mbao refinery. “ From 2025, at the very beginning of the year, in the first quarter, it is expected that the refinery will consume, in part, Senegalese oil, in combination with the Nigerian oil that it has historically refined. », Adds Charles Thiemele, Africa director of the oil and gas trading company BGN.

Local refining of Sangomar oil has fallen behind schedule. It is a particularly heavy raw product, with a high sulfur content. It is now sold, for export, mainly on Asian markets.
