Börje Salming is getting ready to leave Sweden.
At the same time, the family has received the go-ahead for more care at home.
– This is exactly how you want it to be, says Pia Salming to Expressen.
Börje Salming has received the thoughts and support of the hockey world during his fight against the nerve disease ALS. It was earlier in the autumn that Börje, together with his wife Pia, in a strong interview with Expressen told about how tough it is right now. Börje Salming has lost most of the ability to speak, and is also forced to be tube-fed.
The family’s tribute to care
In the interview, Pia and Börje talked about the difficulties that exist. Among other things, about the medicine from Canada that Börje needs to be stopped at customs, and they also directed great criticism at the care of Börje, and the fact that he has not been assigned a personal assistant, as he is over 65 years old. But now comes positive news for the family. Salming will soon be going to Canada and Toronto as it is Hall of Fame weekend, and since it is allowed to bring medicine into Sweden, as opposed to sending it in, nothing will be able to stop it this time.
But in addition, Börje and the family have now received significantly improved care at home in Sweden. After all the criticism, according to Expressen, ASIH (advanced healthcare in the home) has now taken over the care.
– They do these things with inhalers, cough machines and phlegm suction and stuff like that. So they have passed each other in teams and taught each other. Once you get them connected and they do these things, they are fantastic, says Pia Salming to Expressen.

“The way you want it to be”
Pia Salming believes that it was exactly what was needed, as the municipality’s home care does not have all the required qualifications. And Börje Salming must also react positively to the big change.
– There are doctors, counselors, physiotherapists, speech therapists. They come here, they are super flexible and very nice, and care about Börje. And he thinks it’s nice, and gives the thumbs up when they come, says Pia Salming.
Pia Salming was adamant in her criticism of the care in the first interview with Expressen, and the criticism has also come from Börje’s brother, Stig Salming, who also said that it is deplorable that Börje did not have the right to assistance. Now, however, Pia pays tribute to how care in the home works.
– This is exactly how you want it to be, she says.
