According to UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, Ukraine and Russia must reach an agreement on the demilitarization of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant area. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has proposed an inspection visit to the power plant.
The UN Security Council meeting on the safety situation of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant remained a mutual accusation for Ukraine and Russia. UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo in turn said that Ukraine and Russia must reach an agreement on the demilitarization of the nuclear power plant area as the war continues.
News channel According to CNN (you’ll go to another service) Ambassador of Ukraine to the UN Serhi Kyslytsja called Tuesday’s Security Council meeting a waste of time and said Russia’s UN ambassador Vasili Nebenzian filled the meeting with false slogans.
Nebenzia said that the Ukrainian forces continued to fire artillery at the nuclear power plant area and thereby increased the risk of a nuclear accident even more.
Kyslytsja, in turn, accused Russia of increasing the risk by continuing the presence of its forces in the power plant area. Russia has been suspected of storing weapons and other equipment at the power plant.
Kyslytsya said that Ukraine supports the proposal of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to send its personnel on an inspection visit to the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. At the same time, he hoped that the IAEA would leave permanent observers at the power plant.
– It would be important for the IAEA to conduct an inspection visit in a way that would show the whole world the real situation of the power plant, and not the theater staged by Russia, said Kyslytsja.
The UN has sufficient capacity to support the IAEA’s inspection visit
The UN has consulted the IAEA and decided that the UN has the required logistics and sufficient security capacity in Ukraine to support the IAEA’s inspection visit to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
DiCarlo, UN Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs, commented on the issue at the Security Council meeting.
According to DiCarlo, the preparations for the visit have progressed and the IAEA has actively consulted all parties in order to make the visit happen as soon as possible.
– We welcome the recent statements of Ukraine and Russia, which support the IAEA’s intentions to visit the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, DiCarlo said.
Earlier, the IAEA announced its intention to visit the Russian-owned Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in the coming days, if the negotiations to organize an inspection are successful.
For weeks now, the IAEA has wanted to send inspectors to the nuclear power plant, where, according to the organization, safety regulations are constantly being violated. In recent weeks, there have been attacks on the power plant area, for which Ukraine and Russia have blamed each other.
