Two Russian-registered vessels have been circling the Kattegatt for over a day.
The coast guard is following the ships – which have now started to move.
– The two ships have started to go south, we have noted that, says Mattias Lindholm, spokesperson for the Coast Guard.
The Russian ships are in the Danish economic zone between Sweden and Denmark. During yesterday, the Coast Guard confirmed that they were following the two ships.
– We know those ships, and we have informed the relevant authorities and the Danish coast guard, says Klas Loven, command center officer at the coast guard, to TV4 Nyheterna on Tuesday.
Deviated from the route during the morning
Shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, the ships deviated from the route they had been following for the past 24 hours.
– The two ships have started to go south, we have noted that, says Mattias Lindholm, spokesperson for the Coast Guard.
One vessel is a SAR, short for Search and Rescue Vessels, and is 49 meters long. The other is a tugboat, 70 meters long. One of the vessels departed from a port outside Kaliningrad on Saturday, according to the Marine Traffic radar service. The second left a port outside Saint Petersburg on December 23 last year, according to the site.
Coast Guard: Not been in contact with the ships
The coast guard states that there has been no contact with the ships.
– They have not done anything special and they are in the Danish economic zone. There are many ships that behave in a deviant way, but which we do not need to contact, says Mattias Lindholm.
At the same time, he points out that the weather has been quite difficult, which may be a reason for the ships’ behavior.
– Then it can be easier to move than to lie still, says Mattias Lindholm.
