The Russian energy company Inter RAO does not rule out the possibility that electricity sales to Finland and other EU countries will be restored despite the war in Ukraine. The company has a monopoly on electricity export in Russia. A Russian economic magazine reported on the matter Kommersant (you will switch to another service).

Kommersant bases its news on the fact that the Russian power system operator Sistemnij Operator has included the export of electricity to the EU region in the Russian energy system development program in 2023-2028. According to the economic magazine, the export forecast is based on Inter RAO’s data.

Inter RAO estimates that in 2023 the export to Finland could be 4 billion kilowatt hours. In total, in the years 2023-2028, exports to Finland are estimated to rise to 24 billion kilowatt hours. Instead, the company aims to sell 2.4 billion kilowatt hours to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania this year.

First Vice-Chairman of the Energy Committee of the Russian Duma Igor Ananskih confirmed Izvestija (you switch to another service)– newspapers that the sale of Russian electricity to the EU could be restored.

– I think that it is possible. I am convinced that the first emotional reactions and rejection of cheap Russian energy sources are passing, Ananskih estimates.

According to him, electricity supply to the territory of the European Union depends on the international situation.

According to the Ministry of Labor and the Economy, the topic has not even been discussed within the ministry.

– Importing electricity from Russia is not a topical issue at the moment, says the director general of the ministry’s energy department Riku Huttunen.

Russia already stopped electricity sales to Finland last May. The Russian company RAO Nordic suspended the import of electricity “due to difficulties in payment transactions”.
