The Rookie series creator explains how the series title still

In the series The Rookie – literally The Beginner – the main character of Nathan Fillion develops further with each season. Series creator Alexi Hawley explains why the series title still applies.

The Rookie is about new beginnings

The dramedy follows John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), a middle-aged man who decides to start a new life as a police officer. He makes a new start in Los Angeles alongside his colleagues Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Jackson West (Titus Makin Jr.).

It’s about how to reinvent yourself, start over – and develop further. Nolan and his colleagues are no longer beginners. Rather, in season 6 we were able to experience how Nolan himself becomes an instructor.

Explanation of the title: Why we still don’t run out of rookies

As early as 2020, AssignmentX raised the question of whether the series title might be outdated in the near future. But series creator Alexi Hawley offers a plausible explanation for this:

I think, that due to his unique position as the oldest rookie, he will always enter the next level of the LAPD as a rookie. Of course the first time as a patrol officer, the first time as a training officer. With great success he is the oldest rookie detective in season 8.

The theme runs consistently:

So basically it’s about a character who finds himself between these worlds. Because he is twenty years older than his colleagues, and the people at the LAPD are all his superiors. So it will always stay that way.

Fans of the series can therefore rest assured: the series remains true to itself – and therefore also to its title.

When does The Rookie it Season 7 continue?

The Rookie Season 7 comes to Germany in January. From January 10th, episode 1 will be streamed in the original sound on WOW, from January 24th the episode will be broadcast in German dub on Sky One and will then also be available on WOW.
