La Fiera is one of the most exciting characters in The Rookie series universe: Legendary drug lord, tough businesswoman, loving mother – but the series doesn’t do it justice. Camille Guaty makes her appearance as La Fiera in Season 3 and immediately finds herself in a hail of bullets. Detective Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) saves her life. We get to know the drug lord from Guatemala as a woman with interesting contrasts.
But your five episodes were at least five too few. The Rookie wasted a lot of potential with her ridiculous death.
La Fiera was finally a really exciting opponent in The Rookie
Antagonists in series are not always allowed to be vulnerable, let alone have a private life. Not like that Sandra de la Cruz aka La Fiera. As the figure in Season 3, Episode 3, Family Ties (original: La Fiera), when a merciless drug dealer and at the same time a warm-hearted mother is introduced, an interesting contradiction is already created. As soon as she enters the screen, anything is possible.
In The Rookie, La Fiera is assigned her very own police counterpart: the main character and pregnant detective Angela Lopez. Because of this, it has to endure much more than just a firefight. At the same time, we also experience empathetic, almost harmless-seeming moments with La Fiera, for example when she asks Lopez to thank her for her efforts Gift for your unborn child or spends time with her son Diego, whom she obviously loves.
Because of this personal connection from mother to mother, Lopez desperately tries to stop La Fiera from continuing their fight against Tomás Madrigal’s enemy cartel. As La Fiera’s teenage son Diego in Episode 12, Broken Hearts (original: Braveheart), is shot as a result of another attack, it leaves a dull feeling. Not only Angela, we also feel for the dangerous drug lord.
The screenwriters get even nastier when La Fiera begins a bloody campaign of revenge that leads to her own arrest. We can relate to La Fiera’s pain, which makes her atrocities all the more shocking.
But this is also where my criticism of The Rookie begins: La Fiera’s arrest knocks out a character who made The Rookie season 3 more dangerous and more alive than ever before thanks to her unpredictability in just a few episodes. Having an opponent like La Fiera up your sleeve is an asset to any writer’s room. But instead of further developing the exciting character, her arrest is the beginning of the end.
La Fiera goes from being the best villain in The Rookie to a caricature
As you can imagine, a La Fiera is not that easy to arrest. She breaks out on the way to prison – in the season finale of season 3. The previously exciting storyline with La Fiera becomes something too turbulent to take it seriously.
La Fiera blames the pregnant Detective Lopez for the death of her son and has Angela Lopez kidnapped at her own wedding. Season 4 starts with a bizarre plot: La Fiera has fallen into the delusion of raising Lopez’s unborn child as her own out of revenge. To do this, she kidnapped Lopez to her property in Guatemala.
The ending of La Fiera is neither dignified nor well thought out
Of course, all of The Rookie’s colleagues rush to help and free Lopez from La Fiera’s clutches. La Fiera is shot dead by Lopez himself during the rescue operation. The final image of La Fiera shows her lifeless body thrown against a fence like a doll in a bizarre moment, while her face is completely blank. A brutal and rushed death:

It seems that the writers of The Rookie didn’t appreciate the potential given to them with an ambivalent character like La Fiera. The way she was written out of the series, leaves a bitter aftertaste.
A brilliant opponent like La Fiera deserved a dignified series death. Or, better yet, no death at all. Unpredictable appearances and perfidious campaigns of revenge would have been possible – and it would have been a joy for us fans.
