This morning we got the sad news that Val Kilmer died at the age of 65. Over the years he played in some classics and cult films, including Top Gun, True Romance and Heat. If you want to experience it in one of your best roles, you should definitely take a look at Tombstone.
The Western, which is streamed in the subscription of Disney+, comes up with a who’s who of the robust Hollywood stars, and yet it is Kilmer who is probably the most impressive performance. However, this is not the only reason to catch up with the unauthorized stylish western.

Tombstone came to cinemas in 1993 when the Western dances with the wolf thanks to films and mercilessly celebrated a small revival. The focus is on the legendary law enforcement officer Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell), who wants to calm down in the town of Tombstone. There he meets his old friend Doc Holliday (Kilmer)that can be treated because of his tuberculosis. But as the Western wants, Wyatt and his brothers Virgil (Sam Elliott) and Morgan (Bill Paxton) do not remain undisturbed. Cowboy “Curly Bill” Brocious (Powers Boothe) steps on the scene and when Wyatt steps towards him, he automatically lends himself to Curly Bill’s gang, which will have fatal consequences for Wyatt.
The background to the story is the shootout on the OK Corral, which happened in 1881 and has contributed to myth formation around the real (and not quite as heroic) Wyatt Earp.
Tombstone is anything but a deconstruction of the western genre à la merciless. The film by director George P. Cosmatos and screenwriter Kevin Jarre stylizes Wyatt Earp and his brothers to iconic western heroes, whose casualness and speed with the colt is only exceeded by their sleek ceiling. It speaks for Val Kilmer’s enormous talentthat he conjures up the most charismatic appearance from the cowboy hat in a line -up between Kurt Russell, Bill Paxton, Sam Elliott, Stephen Lang and Billy Zane (!).

Tombstone offers a parade of male men who make male male things, no matter which side of the law they are on. Val Kilmer is in no way inferior to his colleagues when it comes to beard growth, but stands out from them in other points. The most striking is his sickly pallor and the cold sweat that you suspect on your nose at all times.
Kilmers Doc Holliday is a man -broken man who approaches the end of his life on shaky legs. He will be maintained by his will, his joke and the fact that he can not get himself down from death or devil or by any gangwid gang.
In a film full of classic Western stereotypes, Val Kilmers Doc Holliday is a gunfire from Shakespeare’s formatA tragic figure that exposes its true size at its lowest point. What sounds much too high for a film like Tombstone that satisfies the simplest western coats: we watch infinitely cool guys as they turn up. And with no one is as much fun as with Val Kilmers Doc Holliday.
