According to Teivo Teivainen, professor of world politics at the University of Helsinki, Bolsonaro condemned the riots because he knows that the coup could not succeed.
of the former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro rioting by supporters will hardly lead to a coup, says a professor of world politics at the University of Helsinki Teivo Teivainen. In his opinion, the riots still contained the ingredients of a coup attempt.
Interviewed by on Sunday evening, Teivainen repeated his views on the failure of a possible coup attempt in ‘s morning on Monday.
However, there is speculation that there are tensions between the Brazilian armed forces and the local police at the moment, he says.
– The regional police and the federal soldiers have been at odds, one has blocked the other’s way. I don’t think that will lead to the intervention of the armed forces either, says Teivainen.
President of the United States Joe Biden has condemned the actions of the rioters. Bolsonaro is said to have been on good terms with the ex-president of the United States Donald Trump’s with.
In Teivainen’s opinion, it is clear that the reaction of the United States could have been milder or even partly supportive of the rioters if Trump had been president.
He believes that the Brazilian armed forces know that if they tried to seize power in the country, there would be no support from the United States.
– The Biden administration is unlikely to support the coup attempt in any way, at least not in a way that could become public. The armed forces know that and are not stupid enough to drive the country into such bad international limbo.
Teivainen: Bolsonaro does not want to hang his own future
Bolsonaro, who is currently staying in Florida in the United States, has condemned the riots. He knows that a coup has no chance of success, Teivainen estimates.
– He doesn’t want to hang too much of his own political future, which he may still have, on supporting such a group of vandals.
The riots may even be confirmed by the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva administration, Teivainen believes. Some of Bolsonaro’s supporters may lean towards Lula as a result of the events.
– Finns will probably be interested in what Lula’s administration’s foreign policy will be, for example in relation to Russia, which we didn’t have time to think about in the early stages of Lula’s administration.
