The Riksdag will today give the go-ahead to send an armed force to Sudan.

The force is to assist in the evacuation of Swedes.

Already at eight o’clock on Sunday morning, the foreign affairs committee meets. The committee must submit a proposal to the Riksdag to give the go-ahead to send an armed force to Sudan.

The committee meeting takes place digitally.

A couple of hours later, at 10:30 a.m., the Riksdag’s chamber will make a decision on the proposal. However, the meeting starts already at 10 o’clock for a first table setting of the proposal.

According to an agreement between the parties, at least 17 members must be present for a decision to be made. The meeting will be chaired by the speaker of the Riksdag, Andreas Norlén.

The fact that the Riksdag is called in extra depends on the fact that the evacuation effort must take place quickly. Foreign Minister Tobias Billström (M) and Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M) announced yesterday that it could be carried out within 24 hours after the Riksdag said yes.

In Sudan, where battles are raging between two military phalanxes, there are approximately one hundred Swedish citizens. The evacuation effort is mainly about the embassy staff, but also other Swedes if possible.
