The researchers’ happy news: Expect a cure for post-covid – this year

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Scientists are on the way to a breakthrough in curing post-covid, a condition that has affected millions of people. – We may have a cure already this year, says Petter Brodin, pediatrician and professor of immunology at the Karolinska Institutet. The exact number of people affected by post-covid is not fully known, but according to WHO Europe’s estimate, it is at least 17 million Europeans who experienced the condition during the first two years of the pandemic. If you look at the number of victims in Sweden, the statistics are uncertain and the dark figure is considered to be large. But according to the latest estimate from the National Board of Health and Welfare, approximately 30,000 patients with a diagnosis of post-covid were cared for in primary care between October 2020 and 31 October 2021. Newer figures show that just over 10,000 received specialist care for post-covid up to March 8 this year. The statistics only contain the people who sought treatment for post-covid and were diagnosed, but it is clear that in any case it is about tens of thousands of people. The search for a cure According to Petter Brodin at the Karolinska Institute, several studies are underway to find a cure. Among other things, they are trying to find a way to remove remnants of the virus from the body. – We know enough to be able to try different things, he says. And if the studies go well, a cure could be available as early as 2023. – We hope so, based on a treatment study that will start shortly, says Judith Bruckfälld, senior physician and associate professor at Karolinska University Hospital.
