The cathedral, one of the landmarks of Paris, is scheduled to open to the public in December.
In Paris, Notre Dame Cathedral is returning to its former glory five years after a raging fire. In charge of restoration Philippe Jostin according to that, all the biggest challenges of the repair work are already behind us.
The cathedral is scheduled to open to the public in December. Last month, it was estimated that the repair work was progressing on schedule. A significant milestone was reached in February when the scaffolding was removed from around the cathedral’s new tower. According to Jost, after the repairs are completed, the cathedral will see, among other things, more natural light than before.
Vicar of the cathedral Olivier Ribadeau Dumas describes to the news agency AFP that he feels humbled in front of all those who have built Notre Dame, protected it or participated in its repairs. According to him, people will get an unprecedented insight into the dimensions of the cathedral when the building opens to the public in December.
The cause of the fire was probably an accident
The sanctuary, one of the landmarks of Paris, was badly damaged in the 2019 fire. In the fire, the building lost, among other things, its Gothic tower and several artifacts kept in the cathedral.
President of France Emmanuel Macron soon after the fire, set the goal that the 850-year-old church building would be repaired within five years. The work was originally supposed to be completed by the Olympics in Paris this summer, but the schedule had to be extended due to problems encountered during the repair work.
About 850 million euros have been collected through donations for the cathedral’s repair work. The cause of the devastating fire has still not been determined. It is considered probable that it was an accident.
