the relative weight of Slovakia – LExpress

The new Slovak Prime Minister announced this Thursday, October 26 that his country would stop supplying weapons to kyiv, limiting its support to “humanitarian and civil aid”. A decision which should not change the course of the war, but whose symbolism remains strong.

With 680 million euros granted since the Russian invasion to Ukraine, Slovakia was far from being the biggest financial supporter of kyiv’s war effort. For comparison, support from Washington amounted to 42.1 billion euros as of July 31, according to the Kiel Institute. Given its economic weight, Bratislava’s boost still represented a significant burden on the finances of the Slovak state.

This is one of the countries which made the greatest effort in relation to their GDP with 0.65%, i.e. twice as much as the United States, just behind Norway, the Baltic States, Denmark and Poland.

Slovakia is one of the European countries whose inhabitants are considered the most pro-Russian: only 40% of them believe that Russia is responsible for the war.
