The regional government in Stockholm wants to stop running hospitals as their own companies

The change would apply to Södersjukhuset, Danderyd hospital, Södertälje hospital, St. Erik’s eye hospital and the ambulance service.

Behind the proposal is the center coalition in Region Stockholm consisting of S, MP, C with the support of V.

The objection to running the hospitals in their current form, as a limited company, has been, among other things, that it means that the hospitals basically compete against each other, according to the regional board. Despite the fact that all are ultimately owned by Region Stockholm.

In the proposal from the regional board, it is believed that there are several advantages to joint management. Among other things, that the hospitals can procure together, run with a common and streamlined administration and generally collaborate more easily.

The opposition is critical: “Takes an incredible amount of time and energy”

But the opposition does not share the view of all the benefits, but sees a risk that patients and the working environment will suffer.

– Major reorganizations always take an incredible amount of time and energy. This one will too. This without us seeing any profits for either patients or employees. The hospitals can use that time better on patients and care, says Irene Svenonius (M), opposition regional councillor.

From a purely organizational point of view, the change means that the hospitals would be run under committees instead. Among other things, an emergency hospital board and an ambulance medical board.
