The month of September has begun with an unprecedented heat wave. The night of Monday brought another unique weather event.
– In several locations in southern Sweden, we have had a tropical night, says TV4’s meteorologist Madeleine Westin.
Last week, the highest temperature so far in the month of September was measured when stations in both Lund and Helsingborg measured temperatures of 31.1 degrees.
The night of Monday set a new record. Several places in southern Sweden measured a temperature that never fell below 20 degrees, which is the requirement for it to count as a tropical night. The heat of the night means the last measured tropical night of the year so far in Sweden’s history.
– We have a confirmed tropical night in Malmö and Skillinge, but more places may be added, says Madeleine Westin, meteorologist at TV4.
– It is most common for tropical nights to occur in August, she adds.
September’s high temperature the reason
The record late tropical night, the meteorologist explains, is a consequence of the recent extreme heat.
– In addition, the water is still warm thanks to this heat, explains Madeleine.
– But now we are moving towards colder weather, she concludes.
The previous record was from September 5, 2002, when Öland’s northern cape measured tropical temperatures. The warmest tropical night in Sweden that has been measured so far occurred in August 1975. At that time the measuring station Kullen had 23.7 degrees.
