Adrien Quatennens will indeed be a candidate for re-election in the next legislative elections, but he will not benefit from the support of the New Popular Front. For what ?

The question of the inauguration of Adrien Quatennens under the banner of the New Popular Front during the early legislative elections had provoked lively debates within the new alliance of the left, due to his conviction for domestic violence in December 2022. Finally, the outgoing deputy La France insoumise (LFI), candidate for re-election in the first constituency of the North, will only be supported by his party during the election on June 30 and July 7, according to information from France Blue published Friday June 14.

According to an internal source in the Socialist Party (PS) whose comments are relayed by France Blue, Adrien Quatennens will not be able to benefit from the investiture of the New Popular Front nor from the support of the other political groups making up this new union (PS, Place publique, Génération.s, the ecologists and the communists). On the other hand, always according to France Bluethe other parties of the New Popular Front have undertaken not to present a candidate facing the rebels in its northern constituency.

A source of tension

Since the announcement of the dissolution of the National Assembly and the start of the early legislative campaign, the subject of the inauguration of Adrien Quatennens was a source of tension within the left-wing parties. From the evening of the dissolution, the environmentalist deputy Sandrine Rousseau had thus estimated on BFMTV that “the investiture of Adrien Quatennens arises[ait]”, and that this was one of the “things” that needed to be “discussed”.

“We will not support a candidate who has been convicted,” said June 13 on the same channel the national secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF), Fabien Roussel. Pierre Jouvet, general secretary of the PS, for his part, indicated this Friday on BFMTVthat the socialists would not display their logo “on posters and leaflets” of Adrien Quatennens.
