the reasons for the European dropout

Artificial intelligence, design and manufacture of microprocessors, space industry, quantum, batteries… In none of these fields has Europe managed to bring out a giant, or even to take significant market shares. It is neither for lack of talent nor for lack of capital, but the “sauce” does not take.

The only area of tech where Europe is unbeatable is the regulations and the fines that go with them: a cataract of 23 billion euros in penalties of all kinds which correspond to various violations of the laws in force, in general by the GAFAM. Such know-how is (sometimes) exported as we have seen with the GDPR, which has become a model in terms of personal data protection. But you don’t build an industry with this bureaucratic obsession.

So what is European tech missing? To talk about it, Control F invited André Loesekrug-Pietri. He is the founder of JEDI, the Joint European Disruptive Initiative, inspired by the US Army’s innovation agency, DARPA, which has brought many technological breakthroughs. For this former Airbus and Ministry of Defense, the solution requires major projects and the leadership to carry them.
