As the site CBR reports, there was a very specific reason for Zoe Andersen’s famous serial death in The Rookie.
In The Rookie, Mercedes Mason (How to Get Away with Murder, Fear the Walking Dead) plays the role of Captain Zoe Andersen. We don’t just get to know her as the strict boss of the main character John Nolan (Nathan Fillion).
Rather, Zoe Andersen is an amazingly open figure who is very loyal to her colleagues and, similar to Nolan, has not lost trust in those around her. It’s all the more shocking that before the end of season 1, Andersen without any warning in a brutal manner dies.
According to showrunner Alexi Hawley, Mercedes was Mason’s exit or Zoe’s exit Andersen’s death not planned from the start. On Platform X he explained how this came about:

In fact, Andersen’s sudden death noticeably changed the mood in the loose crime series. Her loss made it clear to viewers that The Rookie is not just an entertainment series in which no danger ever becomes real.
