Those who are interested in the Oscars can now watch one of the best films of this year in the cinema nominated in the main category are: The pronunciation. Sarah Polley’s new film takes you to a hayloft where a group of women discuss their future after experiencing sexual violence at the hands of their husbands.
The basis of the film is the novel of the same name by Miriam Toews, which was published in 2018 and originally has the title Women Talking carries. Although The Pronunciation tells a fictional story, the plot is based on real events that took place in a Mennonite colony in Bolivia.

We learn what this colony looks like almost exclusively through the descriptions given by the women. They are shocked to find out that their husbands have used drugs intended for cows at night to drugged and raped become. However, no one dares to speak about it in public.

The hayloft is the only safe place, where the women can talk and think about their situation. Nonetheless, even here there are some frightened looks that carry the suffering of many years of oppression. However, it quickly becomes clear that something has to change. The only question is which way the women choose.
Three options are discussed and debated throughout the film. The most radical: the women set off alone, leave the colony behind and try to start a new life, no longer oppressed by their religion and men. This step requires great courage and careful planning.
Cinema return after 12 years: Sarah Polley has created a really strong film
Sarah Polley, who was last seen on the big screen in 2011 with Take This Waltz, has chosen difficult material for her return to the cinema, which she implements all the more impressively. Watched carefully the women in the hayloft to understand what is going on inside them.
We follow lengthy discussions in which many different perspectives are expressed. Without that great ensemble that wouldn’t be possible. The Pronunciation brings together outstanding actors such as Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Frances McDormand and Ben Whishaw.
Unfortunately, the pronunciation is not very far ahead in the Oscar predictions. Audience favorites like Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin currently have significantly better chances.
