The puzzle of maternity leave for female mayors

The fight against the tiger mosquito in France

With only 20% women at the head of French town halls, municipal executives are struggling to make room for elected officials who wish to become mothers. It is this legal vacuum which is denounced by many elected officials in France. This follows the call from the EELV mayor of Poitiers, who is about to give birth. The question is the subject of a text which is currently being studied in the Senate. For the moment, the salaries of these elected officials are not maintained for the legal duration of maternity leave and their temporary work is not properly ensured. This therefore involves very difficult reluctant choices.

Going on maternity leave would mean losing your mayor's compensation and taking the risk of delaying important files since no official interim exists.
