The pulse is raised in the trial against Trump: “Everyone has an opinion”

Five trial days have passed in the case where Donald Trump is accused of accounting crimes after paying “hush money” to former porn star Stormy Daniels. The former president himself has called the process a “witch hunt”.

Outside the courtroom, hundreds of people have gathered to follow the historic event – and the emotions are strong.

– There is enormous pressure. It’s jam-packed with journalists, police and protesters, says Ginna Lindberg, Sveriges Radio’s correspondent in Washington.

This week, a crucial part of the trial began, namely the selection of the jury that will judge the case. The task is a challenge because those selected must not have any preconceived notions about Trump.

– In today’s incredibly polarized USA, pretty much everyone has an opinion. It will be difficult and take much longer than usual, says Lindberg.

Must answer 42 questions

So far, seven out of 18 jury members have been selected. Filling the remaining places is predicted to take several days. Altogether, there are hundreds of candidates to be reviewed.

– They have to answer a total of 42 questions about everything from media habits to where they live. It is a very protracted process, says Stefan Åsberg, SVT’s US correspondent who recently returned from New York.

The process is made more difficult by the fact that New York consists of mostly Democratic voters, something that has been repeatedly pointed out by Trump and his defenders.

– In fact, it should not affect the case, but it will likely color the court case. If Trump is convicted, he and his supporters will always be able to claim that it was politically motivated, says Stefan Åsberg.

The trial is expected to last two months.
