The municipality of Utrecht, among others, already started in 2020 with a laughing gas ban in various neighborhoods. In Vleuten-De Meern, Leidsche Rijn, South, Northeast, Overvecht, West, Northwest and Southwest, it has therefore been prohibited to possess or use nitrous oxide for some time. These neighborhoods were chosen because reports from 2018 to 2022 showed that there is structural nuisance. An evaluation by the municipality shows that a local laughing gas ban works well against laughing gas use.
The Public Prosecution Service and the police will now also enforce the nitrous oxide ban
