The Public Health Agency warns all the elderly Can lead

The Public Health Authority is concerned. Spring vaccinations against covid-19 are in full swing, but things are going very slowly. So far, only about 30 percent of all people aged 80 and over have received the initial dose.

They need protection from serious illness and death

People who are 80 years and older, or 65 years and older with daily care activities, are recommended to get a booster dose of the vaccine in the spring of 2024 to maintain their protection.

These groups are extra sensitive and need to top up their vaccination twice a year to maintain their protection against serious illness and death, writes the Public Health Agency in a press release.

– Covid-19 continues to cause serious illness, and in the worst case can lead to death. Therefore, people who belong to the risk group are recommended to get vaccinated, says the Director General Karin Tegmark Wisell in a press release and continues:

– Some risk groups need vaccination twice a year to have strong protection all year round. For them, it is important to get vaccinated in the spring, so that the protection remains high and even until it is time for the autumn dose.

The vaccine’s effect disappears more quickly in the elderly

The risk of getting really sick from covid-19 increases with age, at the same time the vaccine’s effect decreases and therefore wears off faster for older people. Therefore, the public health authority wants these groups to vaccinate themselves, as they live with an increased risk of becoming infected and really sick.

– We really want to emphasize the benefit of taking the vaccine dose against covid-19 that is being offered this spring. Those who took last year’s care dose were found to have a markedly lower risk of ending up in hospital during the late summer and autumn. Through vaccination, we can not only reduce human suffering, but also relieve the burden on healthcare and care, says state epidemiologist Magnus Gisslen in the press release.
