PlayStation boss Hideaki Nishino spoke about the console’s past and future in an interview. He explains that although the gaming PC is becoming more and more widespread, it does not pose a threat to the PS5.
Where does the information come from? Hideaki Nishino, co-CEO of PlayStation, spoke about the success and future of the console in an interview with Japanese site Famitsu. The conversation took place on the occasion of the PlayStation’s 30th birthday.
The market is changing, but consoles are here to stay
What does the boss say? about the location of the PS5? According to Hideaki Nishino, the PS5 will still be doing very well in 2024. In September the 65 million unit mark was exceeded. People would play longer than they did on the PS4 and would also use the store more.
The boss also admits that the games market as a whole has become more diverse: mobile phone games are popular in some regions, games for the PC in others. In Japan, PlayStation’s home country and one of its three largest markets, the number of gaming PCs is also increasing rapidly.
Nevertheless, Hideaki Nishino believes that the PS5 will be around “for a very long time” and that consoles will remain PlayStation’s core business in the future. The PC is therefore not seen as a threat, but rather as a useful addition.
“We are in the process of thinking about how to increase the number of PlayStation users overall, including via PSN,” said the PlayStation boss.
For Hideaki Nishino, there are two main factors that are crucial to the success of a console: the available titles and the social aspect. Many people would buy a PlayStation because their friends also had one.
When it comes to the games available, it’s important to make sure there’s enough content.
However, at the last meeting with investors, Sony assured that there was no “significant risk” of losing PlayStation players to the PC. Such a trend has not yet been confirmed (via 3D Juegos).
Another sign that consoles won’t be disappearing from households anytime soon is that they continue to be a popular gift under the Christmas tree. To avoid disappointment with the gift, you should make sure you get the right one: mother buys her children an Xbox for Christmas, but that only causes frustration
