It was on January 7 that the two police officers went out to an alarm about mental illness at Kungsängen in Jönköping. When they arrive at a residence, the man who has been reported to be disruptive has left the apartment.
The police follow him and in a wooded area the man attacks with a sword. One of the officers received life-threatening injuries and the officer who then shot the perpetrator received injuries to a hand.

The police attack: The suspect seriously mentally ill
The prosecutor demands that the 35-year-old be sentenced for attempted murder of the policemen
Seeks forensic psychiatric care
The forensic psychiatric examination carried out shows that the man suffered from a serious mental disorder at the time of the act, but also at the time of the examination.
Prosecutor Emma Harrius therefore requested that the man be sentenced to closed forensic psychiatric care with a special discharge examination. She believes that the man has nevertheless been conscious enough at the time of the act that he can be sentenced to this penalty.
The man should be acquitted
The man’s defense lawyer, Tor Åström, argued instead that the man should be acquitted because he was suffering from a serious mental disorder at the time and was not aware of his actions and therefore had no intention of harming the police officers.
Because the man suffers from a serious mental disorder, Tor Åström instead believes that his client should receive compulsory psychiatric treatment and that it is something that the administrative court should then decide on.
According to Tor Åström, the man himself believes that he does not suffer from a serious mental disorder.
The Jönköping district court decided after today’s hearing that the man should remain in custody pending a verdict. The verdict will be announced on May 2.
