The property owners demand a change in the law on balcony smokers

Balcony smokers are ruining the lives of their neighbors – and they are difficult to access.
Now the property owners are demanding that the government act.
– Today it is very unclear what actually applies, says the organisation’s CEO Oskar Öholm.

TV4 News’ survey of the country’s 19 largest owners of rental housing, both municipal and private, shows that it is common for residents to complain about neighbors who smoke.

But despite the fact that nearly three out of four companies have some form of smoking ban written into the contract with the tenants, no one has been evicted despite repeated warnings.

The Asthma and Allergy Association demands a tightening of the law and now the organization Fastighetsägarna joins in the criticism.

The demand for the government: Act now

According to the Property Owners, based on today’s legislation, it is not possible to evict a tenant who disturbs the neighbors with his smoking, and they believe that the government should act.

– I think we are ready for a change in this regard and that the law be tightened and thus clarified so that everyone knows what actually applies. Then an alternative could be a ban on smoking in one’s apartment, on the balcony and terrace, says Oskar Öholm, CEO of Fastighetsägarna.

Oskar Öholm thinks that the laws around smoking lag behind.

– The acceptance of tobacco smoking has decreased dramatically, but the legislation has not kept up. Today, it is very unclear what actually applies, says Oskar Öholm, CEO of Fastighetsägarna.
