Janne Andersson was dismissed as national team captain on Sunday.
Now the national team’s actions are being criticized by Johan Kücükaslan.
“Unworthy”, writes the SVT profile on X, formerly Twitter.
After seven years as the national team captain Jan Andersson now done his part in the national team. Also assistant national team captain Peter Wettergren thanks for it. The duo’s final tally was 47 wins in 94 games.
Andersson & Wettergren
Janne Andersson took over as national team captain after Erik Hamrén in 2016. The 61-year-old’s absolute highlight was when he took Sweden to the World Cup 2018 in Russia, after a playoff against Italy. Once there, he led Sweden to the quarter-finals, the furthest they have gone since the 1994 World Cup.

Second on the list of highlights is probably the European Championship play-offs in 2021. Then Sweden reached the round of 16, when they topped the group with Spain, Slovakia and Poland.
In recent years, however, the national team has fared worse. Sweden has failed to qualify for the last two championships (WC 2022 and EC 2024). After the failed EC qualification, it was clear that Janne Andersson and Peter Wettergren must be replaced.
Janne and Peter were dismissed in connection with the final EC qualifying match against Estonia. They ended their last international match as national team captains with a 2–0 win. After the match, they were feted by the crowd, and received flowers and framed shirts from the football association.

The national team also posted a picture on their social media that Janne Andersson is the national team captain who has made the most individual international matches, with his 94. They thus exclude Lasse Lagerbäcks 141 matches in the national team, when he made 68 of them together with Tommy Söderberg.
It is now criticized by the reporter Johan Kücükaslan.
“This trolling with numbers and the concept of ‘individual’ that SvFF is doing. As if Lagerbäck’s 68 matches together with Tommy Söderberg during EC 2000, WC 2002 and EC 2004 never existed. Unworthy,” writes the SVT profile on X, formerly Twitter.
