Insurance premiums have increased again in 2024 but this is particularly true in this region of France.
Every end of the year it’s the same thing: the bills increase. Water, gas, electricity, home insurance, car insurance…there is not one item of decreasing expenditure. Everyone has their own justification and in the end it is always the consumer who pays more. 2024 is no exception to this observation, particularly for motorists. A study of more than 240,000 rates since the start of the year reported on the Assurland.com site shows an average increase of 3.8% in auto insurance nationally. The average annual amount increased from 651 euros at the end of 2023 to 676 euros currently, i.e. an additional expense of 25 euros.
However, there are still large disparities depending on the regions of France. Between Brittany and Corsica, namely the regions where car insurance is the cheapest and the most expensive, the difference in the average annual premium exceeds 300 euros. A Breton pays on average 530 euros per year to insure his vehicle while a Corsican must pay 842 euros, the fault in particular of the dangerous roads and the low competition from insurers on the island of beauty. However, it is not in Bastia, Calvi or Ajaccio that motorists stuck out their tongues the most this year when discovering the new amount of their insurance premium.
It was closest to Corsica on the continent that the pain had the most difficulty in passing. The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region saw the largest increase in the price of car insurance this year. On average, premiums jumped by 6.3% to reach 779 euros, an increase per insured person of 46 euros! For two small euros, the PACA region has overtaken Île-de-France (777 euros) to rise to second place for the most expensive insurance rates behind Corsica. The record number of cars stolen in the Bouches-du-Rhône department largely explains the sharp increase in premiums for insuring your vehicle.
As a reminder, the law requires in France to have at least civil liability insurance, also called “third party insurance”, to be able to drive a motor vehicle. This coverage makes it possible in particular to guarantee the damage that you could cause to others (people, vehicles, property, etc.) in the event of an accident, even if you are responsible. Furthermore, you must keep in mind that driving without insurance is illegal and can result in very heavy penalties, such as a fine of up to 3,750 euros, suspension or cancellation of your driving license, confiscation of the vehicle. or the obligation to complete a road safety awareness course.
