Benfica will never forget what Sven-Göran Eriksson did for the club.
The Swedish coaching icon was greatly celebrated this evening when the Portuguese celebrated 120 years.
When they handed out the “Honorary Award of the Year” to Svennis.

Ever since the shock news came Sven-Göran Eriksson suffering from incurable cancer, the football world has united in its tributes. Tributes have poured in from many different quarters and above all the Swedish coaching icon’s former clubs have shown their support.

“Svennis” is celebrated

“Svennis” was celebrated with a standing ovation at the Swedish Sports Gala earlier this year and over the weekend he received the love of the English at Anfield. The former England captain returned “home” to lead favorite team Liverpool in an exhibition match and was honored with a standing ovation to the tune of “You’ll never walk alone”.

Now Eriksson has received another powerful tribute. When the Portuguese big club Benfica celebrated 120 years with a special anniversary gala, they took the opportunity to pay attention to their favorite Swede.

Received an honorary award

Svennis was coach for the club from 1989 to 1992 and they never forget what the Swede did for the club. During the gala, the “Honorary Award of the Year” was awarded to Sven-Göran Eriksson.

He was unfortunately unable to attend the anniversary evening, but instead sent a speech of thanks – in Portuguese – via a video greeting.
– To all Benfica fans. I hope you have a very nice evening during the fantastic Benfica anniversary. Unfortunately I can’t come this time, but I hope to go and see a Benfica match before the end of the season, says Svennis in the video.
– It would have been perfect to see the Marseille match. Have a good night, cheers Benfica!
