Ahead of the new school year, several new laws and changes are being introduced in primary schools. A new rule is that printed books must be part of the teaching, writes School Board. Digital aids may also be present.

Another major change is that the National Board of Education chooses to remove a popular subject from primary school.

Children who attend primary school are taught everything from Swedish and maths to arts and crafts. In order to increase students’ study motivation, “Student’s choice” was introduced in 1995, which would give students greater power over their education and thus more motivation, reports SVT.

Under “Student’s choice”, the students themselves have had the opportunity to choose a subject they want to delve into and work on more. But SVT reports that the lesson has not been used properly and that many schools have had a limited range of activities to offer during the lesson.

The Swedish National Agency for Education therefore chooses to scrap “Student’s choice” for the fall semester 2024. Instead, more time will be spent on other subjects.

— We have course plans (certain subjects) that are very extensive and where time is not really enough. This applies above all in SO and NO, says the Minister of Education Lotta Edholm (L) previously told TT.

Edholm wants the school to focus more on factual knowledge and basic skills.
