In a square in the center of Buenos Aires, a table, an urn and a message written in capital letters: No to debt payment “. ” It is a popular consultation through which we want to question society on what it thinks of the payment of the debt to the International Monetary Fund explains Sofia Di Mario.

A law student, she is an activist for the social organization Libres Del Sur, which initiated this consultation. In all, more than 8,000 ballot boxes were installed across the country. ” People stop to listen to us, and as we talk, they build critical thinking on the subject. “, continues the activist.

The divided ruling party

At the end of first day of consultation, Libres del Sur claimed to have collected 380,000 signatures. The goal, explains Florencia Pereyra, also a member of the organization, is to bring together a million to put pressure on Congress, which is due to begin examining the agreement on Sunday.

We believe that a million people can make a difference, because elected officials are representatives of the people, and they cannot ignore the people telling them not to pay the debt. »

The agreement with the IMF divides even within the ranks of the ruling party. Its approval by Congress, where the government does not have an absolute majority, is far from certain.
